MY BEAUTY FAVES :: A Peel At Home

A glycolic acid peel can be easily accomplished at home.  I do one once a month unless it's really cold and dry.  It's so easy to do at home and so good for your skin.  It's both anti-aging and helps your skin absorb products better.

Glycolic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane.  It acts as an exfoliant, which means that it removes dead cells in the top layer of the skin.

Glycolic acid is a small molecule so it can penetrate deeper into the skin too where it stimulates collagen production.  Therefore, it can help improve skin firmness and minimize fine lines and wrinkles in the process.

I use this peel regularly.  You can purchase higher strengths too if you want a stronger effect.  I start by preparing my neutralizer solution, combining two tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of water.

I apply the glycolic acid with a cotton ball all over my skin and neck, avoiding the eye and lip area.  I leave it on for 10 minutes.  It's helpful to have something to fan your face with (kid's paperback books work great!).  After 10 minutes, I neutralize the glycolic acid with a cotton ball soaked in the baking soda solution.  I usually do 2 cotton balls at a time to cover both sides of my face in one go.  I repeat a couple of times and then rinse my face with cold water.

This peel strength is for beginners and for sensitive skin.  As your skin gets used to it, you can go up in strength, depending on what your skin goals are.  If you haven't used glycolic acid before, you should do a small patch test to make sure you are not allergic. If you want a peel that you can do more regularly and still get results with I cannot recommend our resurfacing peel enough.

After I remove the glycolic acid, I apply a thin layer of Beautycounter's cleansing balm.  It is so moisturizing and feels so amazing after the glycolic acid.  I help it absorb with my roller, which also serves to stimulate my circulation and lymphatic drainage, reducing any puffiness.

As a finishing touch, I like to apply our new eye revive cooling mask which is both moisturizing and soothing to the undereye area.

Your skin will feel so amazing after the peel and you will also feel relaxed!  I think it's pretty cool that you can accomplish all of this at home.

Have you tried a glycolic peel at home?  I'd love to hear.
