MY BEAUTY FAVES :: Beautycounter's Countersun Mineral Sunblock

With Spring break right around the corner, it's the perfect time to talk about sunscreen choices.  As the weather warms up we will be spending more time outside and needing to reapply sunscreen more often.

There are two types of sunscreen:  chemical and physical barriers.  Chemical barrier sunscreens are creamier and easier to apply and contain questionable ingredients like oxybenzone.  Physical barrier sunscreens contain minerals like titanium or zinc oxide, are thicker in texture, and can be harder to apply.  A lot of the time they can leave you with a chalky white residue.

We have recently added Beautycounter's Countersun sunscreen to our sun protection arsenal as the nice weather seems to be making a comeback in our corner of the world.  I like that it contains non-nano zinc oxide, one of the two ingredients recently ruled to be safe for use in sunscreens by the FDA in a landmark proposed rule.  The sunscreen stick- a must-have with young children- is small enough to fit into your purse or clutch and glides on smoothly so your kids are less likely to protest when you apply.  More importantly, it does not leave a pasty white residue which is very much welcome since it can rub off on any kind of headgear the kids are wearing.  The lotion and spray follow suit in the ease of application and ease the process of applying sunscreen to young children who tend to get impatient quickly.

Beautycounter's sunscreen is also formulated without harmful chemicals like octinoxate and oxybenzone, two popular components of sunscreen now considered to be unsafe.  These two chemicals are not only endocrine (hormone) disruptors, they are also very damaging to coral reefs.  I feel good about purchasing a product that is not only good and safe for me but also good for the environment.  I have plenty of samples to share.  If you are interested in trying this product just send me a message and I'll get a free sample sent out to you.
