Gingerbread houses are a holiday favorite at my house. My kids love any excuse to be close to candy. They are both home bodies like me so putting one together is always a good activity we can do together at home and have fun with.
We are gluten-free and I am also dairy-free. This means that I can't buy any of the kits that you see in the stores everywhere during this time of the year. I used to order one but it was pretty pricey and we were never big fans of their crackers either.
I figured we should be able to improvise and put together a DIY kit at home. Kinnikinnik makes a version of the Graham crackers that is both dairy-free and gluten-free so we grabbed a packet. As far as candy goes, the selection is pretty decent these days. My local Whole Foods now carries allergen-friendly gummy bears and we also get some allergen-friendly chocolate chips. The frosting is easy to find too these days and they vary in the sugar content which is nice.
The biggest challenge putting this gingerbread house together is keeping your kids from eating all the candy. That and also getting the house to stay put together. Ours fell apart three times! If I can do it though, you can do it!
The finished product doesn't all that bad don't you think? My daughter was very proud of our house. I loved that we got to work on it together and that they get to enjoy a gluten-free version of a kid's all-time favorite.
