Gluten-Free Ice Cream Bliss

Gluten-free chocolate ice cream in a cone!
Rococo Ice Cream.  Ogunquit, Maine

We came across a gem on our last day of our Maine vacation that I wanted to share.  My two kids and myself are on a gluten-free diet for health reasons.  I also happen to have a dairy intolerance.  Raising kids gluten-free is tough.  Granted there are more options that have some actual nutrition in the market right now, but the common themes of childhood such as ice cream on a cone are hard to satisfy.  We have a couple of local ice cream shops that we regularly go to and can trust but finding genuine gluten-free ice cream cones that have the crunch in them has been impossible, until now.

We went on another of our find-me-gluten-free quests and came across Rococo's ice cream shop in Ogunquit (http://www.rococoicecream.com/).  The description mentioned gluten-free ice cream cones so we decided to give it a try to see if we could find an actual cone for our eldest.  I had no hopes of finding actual dairy-free ice cream for myself but figured they would have something besides the traditional lemon sorbet which is always too sweet for my taste.  The store is very quaint inside and all the attendants were very helpful, especially Aram.  The flavor selection did not disappoint.  I was so pleasantly surprised to see they had two dairy-free flavored ice creams too!  My eldest was delighted to get her traditional chocolate ice cream served in a gluten-free cone at an actual store for once.  Her expression was pure delight as she enjoyed her ice cream and she couldn't help but double check with me that the cone was actually safe for her.  I went with the dairy-free "Agua de Jamaica" flavor with hibiscus coconut and candied ginger, a perfect symbiosis of sweet and creamy.  The ice cream cone was crunchy with light notes of sugar, nothing like the only gluten-free ice cream cones we have found at the grocery store to date which have a paper texture.

So if you are visiting Ogunquit or just driving by, I recommend that you make a stop at Rococo's ice cream store.   You will not be disappointed

Hope you enjoyed this post!  Back soon!
