GREEN LIVING :: Indoor Plants

I didn't use to be a fan of flexing my green thumb with indoor plants.  I just never seemed to get into them after I tried to grow orchids without much success.  And then last year I bought some for my classroom and fell in love with them.  I find they add so much to indoor spaces!

Indoor plants are a good investment for several reasons.  Not only do they add warmth, but they have also been shown to boost mood, productivity, and reduce stress levels.  I can attest to the latter, as just watering my plants does wonders for me.  Plants are also like live filters in the room.  They will help clean out the air from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in your home and in turn, they will release valuable oxygen and water vapor.  VOCs are found in compounds like formaldehyde which can be present throughout your house in things like rugs, or benzene which is found in solvents and paints.

If you don't have indoor plants but have thought of getting one or more, I wanted to share some good picks that will not only add warmth to your indoors but also help keep the air cleaner in your house.  None of these are a big investment!

1.  Snake plant ::

This elegant plant is an excellent indoor air purifier.  It is great at filtering out formaldehyde and can tolerate low light levels.  We have ours next to the TV so it doesn't get a lot of natural light but it's doing great!

2.  Fern ::

Ferns make the perfect hanging basket.  They like high humidity so you can place them in the bathroom if you have the space.

3.  Pothos ::

This plant is very easy to take care of so it's perfect for the beginner gardener.  It's excellent at purifying the air too.  It prefers indirect light.

4.  Croton ::

I love the colors in the leaves here!  The trick with this plant is not to overwater.  Let the topsoil dry before watering!

5.  Zz plant ::

I was drawn to the name of this plant.  It's perfect for those with brown thumbs.  It's supposed to be impossible to kill.  It makes the perfect centerpiece in a coffee table.  I love the way the leaves grow upright here.  It's a very elegant look!

Thank you for reading this post!

  1. I just discovered the ZZ plant and bought my first one this year. So far, I haven't killed it! :) I don't exactly have a brown thumb, but sometimes certain plants give me a hard time, but I love having a house full!
